So yesterday the transfer window shut for English clubs whilst the rest of Europe can still buy players. It is crazy that we have to cram all the business into such a small timeframe whilst others can continue. On the plus side we are safe in the knowledge that we know who are the players that will fight for the club before the kick off of the season.
Deadline day saw our chase of Kieran Tierney from Celtic completed, It will be interesting to see how he gets on at Arsenal and hopefully he shows he has the ability to nail down the left back position into the next season. We also saw another stop gap defensive signing with David Luiz joining from Chelsea. Yes he adds experience, fight and commitment but he is like Marmite as a player. Some like him, others hate him.
Deadline day also saw Eddie Nketiah leave on loan to Leeds Utd which will provide him with some great experience this season. We also said goodbye to Alex Iwobi who has left for Everton for £30+ million.
One other note was Danny Welbeck who signed for Watford. I feel this was potentially a mistake as he is a good player to have and yes the injury was bad, but at 28 he can still do a job. How much of one he can do remains to be seen but we can see first hand this season when he lines up for The Hornets.
With Saliba out on loan for the season we needed cover in. I feel we needed a big focus on defence this season and last. However we have taken 2 stop gap players in Lichtsteiner and Luiz in. I hope the latter has a better comtribution to the team then Lichtsteiner did.
Overall though, the additions to the squad notibly Pepe and Martinelli are really exciting prospects to follow. Six players coming in was not really expected but was needed.
Looking forward to the start of the season now.
